Two Methods of Collaborative Construction Delivery: Construction Management and Integrated Project Delivery

Presented by Rick Boates - Chairman at Unitech Construction Management

Activity Summary:

This learning activity examines collaborative construction delivery methods, with a focus on Construction Management (CM) and Integrated Project Delivery (IPD). The session explores how traditional procurement models and risk-transfer approaches contribute to conflict and reduced project value, and contrasts these with collaborative models that emphasize early team involvement, transparency, and shared risk. Drawing on Lean Construction principles, the presentation outlines how project delivery structure, contractual relationships, and team behaviours influence project outcomes, and identifies strategies to reduce conflict and improve overall performance.

Objectives:

By the end of this learning activity, participants will be able to:

1.  Compare Construction Management (CM) and Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) models, including differences in contractual structure, team integration, and risk allocation.
2.  Evaluate how procurement strategies and project delivery methods influence collaboration, conflict, and overall project performance.
3.  Apply Lean Construction principles to identify and reduce sources of conflict in construction projects, including strategies related to early team involvement, transparency, and shared risk.
