Building Emissions Reduction Through Electrification
Presented by Shahrukh Shahid, EIT with Pinchin
In Person or Zoom
Thursday, March 10, 2022
Heating buildings by burning fossil fuels causes significant greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In Canada, emissions from buildings account for 12% of total emissions. Nearly 60% of Vancouver’s emissions are attributable to heating in buildings. As part of the drive to reduce emissions, the Vancouver Building By-law (effective January 2022) will require zero emissions equipment for space and hot water heating, as well as additional roof insulation, in new low-rise residential buildings.
Learning Objectives
This webinar will focus on reducing GHG emissions from buildings through electrification. We’ll look at the benefits of heat pump technology, its implementation in buildings as well as its use in 5th generation district energy systems. The webinar will also discuss funding options for electrification projects in BC.
SPEAKER
Shahrukh Shahid
Shahrukh is a Project Engineer in the Alternative Energy group in Pinchin’s Mechanical Engineering Division. He has more than 6 years of combined experience in HVAC / District Energy design and manufacturing operations.
Shahrukh’s work portfolio includes the Oakridge Energy and the UBC Neighborhood District Energy System (NDES) projects, among other projects in BC. He has helped deliver low-carbon electrification and heat-recovery projects and has expertise in energy modelling of energy centers. He has also worked on feasibility studies and energy efficiency upgrade projects. Currently, he is working on the Blatchford Sewer Heat Exchange project for City of Edmonton and a Low-Carbon Electrification project for City of Surrey.
