Presented by James Klassen,
RoofStar Technical Advisor, RCABC
Vegetated roofs can be a
wonderful asset to any building. Not only are they beautiful, but they
also help manage stormwater collection and discharge from roofs (often a
municipal requirement), soften outside sounds heard inside a building, add
warmth and help cool a building (great for older structures), provide a home
and safe foraging for birds and insects, and extend the service life of the
roof membrane that supports it all. The list of benefits goes on.
With all the good things that
green roofs can do, they often get a bad rap. Its not their fault.
The issues green roofs are blamed for often lie with the roof that supports it
poorly designed or built without the care and support an RCABC member
contractor brings. But sometimes green roofs fail because things like the
growing media (soil) that are critical to its success are switched for
cheaper, less reliable materials.
The RCABC Vegetated Roof Guarantee
is changing all that. Our formula for success combines the dedication of
our member contractors with a rigorous Standard, sampling and testing, trained
installers and maintenance contractors, competent project management, and
third-party observations, all geared to ensure your vegetated roof will grow
and please you for very long time.
